EQUATORIAL GUINEA: LIVED ARCHITECTURE
1757-2014

Equatorial Guinea’s wealth of architectural, urban and landscape heritage is one of the country’s fundamental values, and its restoration one of the pillars of sustainable development. The territory has been a place of transit and welcome for many peoples and cultures, and its heritage allows us to trace a journey through the country’s history.

For this reason and for its great value, coinciding with the 2nd Afro-Hispanic Week, devoted to Hispanic heritage in Africa, the Equatoguinean Embassy in the United Kingdom hosts the exhibition “Equatorial Guinea: Lived Heritage”, organized by PATRIMONIO GUINEA 2020.

The exhibit spans three centuries of urban history and built heritage, centring on the result of urban and architecture projects associated with the different moments of occupation and closing with the present-day period and its interventions to revalorize heritage by means of contemporary interventions or restoration of architectural heritage and the urban revitalization of historic centres.

Three centuries summarise the outside influences among which Spain’s was fundamental, to understanding heritage today. Governmental, administrative and religious authorities, and buildings devoted to leisure, commerce, industry and services form the material legacy of the Spanish colonial, provincial and decolonisation eras. This sequence, spanning centuries, saw the participation of architects, engineers and construction companies, with international projection.
